本劇改編自蕾妮·奈特的同名小說。 著名記者Catherine Ravenscroft（凱特·布蘭切特 Cate Blanchett 飾）因揭露他人的不端行為而聲名鵲起。在收到一位不知名作者的小說后，她驚恐地發(fā)現(xiàn)自己就是書中的主角，而這個故事揭露了自己最黑暗的秘密。 在Catherine爭分奪秒揭開作者真實身份的過程中，她不得不直面過去，以免它毀掉自己的生活，毀掉自己與丈夫Robert（薩莎·拜倫·科恩 Sacha Baron Cohen 飾）、兒子Nicholas（柯蒂·斯密特-麥菲 Kodi Smit-McPhee 飾）的關(guān)系。
